In this new 3D Max tutorial, I’m going to be showing everything you need a model a 1951 Mercedes Benz bus. Most vehicle tutorials available on the net are aimed at the intermediate to advanced user (and they always seem to model new Audis for some reason). I want to do something a little different here. The first job is to find our blueprints. The place to go is www.the-blueprints.com. Here you’ll find thousands of different blueprints, ranging from cars and planes, to tanks and supermarket trolleys! When we have our blueprint safely downloaded onto our hard disk, we can’t open up 3D Max straight away. First we need to modify it a little (alright – a lot!) in Photoshop.

Step 1
Here’s the 1951 Mercedes bus. Beautiful piece of machinery. What we have to do is cut it up into four different pieces, so we have the top.bmp, side.bmp, front.bmp and back.bmp. We don’t really need the other side as they are very similar.

Step 2
If you can’t see the rulers, hit CRTL+R. To get the guide lines you need to drag down from the ruler at the top and place it correctly like below. Do the same with the ruler on the left. Now the side view of the bus is enclosed within the guide lines.

Step 3
Make sure that snap is turned on by going to the View menu. Press ‘M’ to activate the Marquee tool and drag over the guides. You’ll see that the selection snaps to the guides. Hit CRTL+C to copy.
