A Rube Goldberg machine is an exceedingly complex apparatus that performs a very simple task in a very indirect and convoluted way. They are usually made of household items and take longer to make than do the actual task they were designed for. Good fun though. Here, our machine is going to perform a very simple task. Follow the step by step instructions for more details.

Step 1
First make a simple box (Create->Geometry->Box) in the Front view. Make it quite big but not very wide. This is going to be a piece of wood, but we’ll put all the materials later.

Step 2
Now we are going to make the first of four little ramps. These will allow the metal ball to fall down in a controlled way. Go Create->Shapes->Rectangle. Drag it out in the front view.

Step 3
Right click it and convert the rectangle to an editable Spline. Press 1 to enter vertex mode and area select the two right vertices. Right click and choose ‘move’ and slightly lower them a little. Notice the nice curve we have made.
